  • Swine flu, yeah I know, another one

So the country seems to be freaking out about this whole swine flu thing.

Similar to the avian flu, this is a flu that only pigs got but has mutated so that humans can get it too. I looked it up on the CDC website so I knew I would be getting pretty good facts. The swine flu is transmitted the way any other flu is transmitted. With pigs, swine flu is spread from pig to pig living in close quarters. While this has caused obvious health concern to humans, I think that this is also a call to reform the way animals are treated. We would all like to imagine that pigs are frolicking in grassy fields on a farm somewhere when in reality they are kept in cramp quarters like this:

     poorpigs

Maybe if we didn't keep pigs like this swine flu wouldn't be so widespread. I think that pigs should be able to live happy lives in green fields not metal cages.

And don't even get me started on chickens:       chickens

If you want to keep updated on number of cases and deaths in the US heres the CDC link

  • Have you ever fainted? From what?

I usually faint when ever I have a blood test. Im not afraid of needles or blood, and I'm totally ok with blood tests, but after they are done I will feel ok and will get up and walk out into the waiting room. Then usually  the nurse will come and talk to my mom and i will be standing there and soon it will feel like my ears are stuffed with cotton and then everything goes black.

I just answered this Featured Question; you can answer it too!

  • stem cell research

There seems to be a lot of media hype about embryonic stem cell research. People seem to think that it will work miracles and we will be able to grow new hearts and lungs, when in reality we are nowhere near this goal. Besides one trial to test the safety of embryonic stem cells, there have been no real clinical studies on the effectiveness of them, while adult stem cell research has been in the clinical trial stage since 2000. Also adult stem cell research has proven successful in curing about 70 diseases such as, certain cancers, auto immune diseases, and blood conditions.

Some may argue that embryonic stem cell research is behind because the government will no longer fund embryonic research on embryos that were frozen after a certain date, but I believe scientists should spend their time researching nuclear reprogramming instead. Nuclear reprogramming was first carried out by a group of Japanese scientists from the University of Kyoto, who by using a skin cells (fibroblasts) can replace the genetic information, reprogramming the cells to act like embryonic stem cells. Not only is this an easier process then therapeutic cloning but the patient’s own skin cells can be used, greatly reducing the chances of the body’s rejection of them. Not to mention, no human lives are ended in this process. I feel that the ending of any human life no matter the size or state of development is wrong even if it is to save others.

As for in vitro, I am against it anyway whether the unimplanted embryos are experimented on or not because so many lives are ended in the process, usually around 30 eggs are fertilized and only one or two babies survive. Besides there are so many children waiting to be adopted, so why not help the children already in existence.
